Wayne Nickens, MD, Founder and Director

Dr. Nickens has directed family practice clinics, served as Clinical Director and Medical Director of various hospitals, wellness centers, and chemical dependency treatment centers. He is a Hawaii and California licensed medical doctor with 42 years of experience in the practice of holistic medicine in family practice. Dr.Nickens is certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) as an addiction medicine specialist. He has also served as medical consultant to corporations, governments, indigenous people groups, nonprofit foundations, professional legal organizations, psychiatric groups, mental health business development projects, churches, and spiritual counseling groups.
He served as president and founder of the Foundation for National Education on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, 1984-87, member of American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), 1987- present, introduced the Employee Assistance Program services to the business community of Maui County, and established an Employee Assistance Process at the Pahio Resort in Kauai, Hawaii. He functioned as Life Coach in developing healthy business cultures for corporations.

He has trained numerous doctors, nurses, counselors, psychiatrists, psychologists, ministers, program administrators, military chaplains, students, and educators.

Beverly Patchell, RN, PhD, APRN PMH-BC - Director
Dr. Patchell is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, with advanced practice certification in Child/Adolescent Mental Health. Her doctoral degree is in Nursing Science with a focus on health disparities. She is currently president of the National Alaska Native American Indian Nurses Association and serves on the Commission to End Healthcare Disparities for the American Medical Association. She has a private practice in traditional Native American healing and complementary and alternative therapies in Oklahoma City and is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the Univ. of OK College of Nursing (OUCN).
She was the Project Director for the American Indian Nursing Student Success Program for 8 years and also served as Site Coordinator for Univ. of MN American Indian/Alaska Native MS to PhD Nursing Science Bridge Program at OUCN. Dr. Patchell is a graduate of the Cultural Competency Leadership Fellowship through the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the recipient of a pre-doctoral fellowship through the Minority Fellowship Program of the American Nurses Association and the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). She is a certified HeartMath and Buzan Mind Mapping trainer for improved health and performance. Other areas of expertise include systems planning, home health care, substance abuse in adolescents, domestic violence and historical trauma.

John Meyer – Director
​
John Meyer has been in management for 29 years, beginning with the trucking industry working as an outside sales manager for 10 of those years. His experience also includes working as a Regional Training Manager overseeing multiple retirement communities throughout Oregon, California and Hawaii, ranging in size from 120-200 units with approx. 30 employees in each building.
​
John is a natural leader with good training, coaching, communication, financial handling and record keeping skills. He also holds a current Train the Trainer Certification helping HR Professionals become more skilled in placing employees in their right roles within the company.

Derek Kanoa - Director
A sales and marketing executive in the global hospitality industry for the past two decades, Derek has been a member of the Healing Community since 2001.
​
“We were able to use many of the components of the Healing Community in our day- to-day operations at the Embassy Vacation resort in Maui and on Kauai in 2001 thru 2003,” Derek commented. “As a native Hawaiian, it was important for me to blend in our island culture and the Spirit of healing in every aspect of our resorts. This gave each team member a sense of belonging and they understood that the leaders truly cared about their welfare and working to become as healthy as possible. Caring for each team member allowed them to work more passionately which resulted in improved productivity. The philosophies and purpose of the Healing Community has been an integral part of team member development at these Hawaiian resorts.“

Susanne Friend & Tim Mann – Aquaponics Specialist

Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (the soil-less growing of plants) that grows fish and plants together in one integrated system. The fish waste provides an organic food source for the plants, and the plants naturally filter the water for the fish.

Paul Nelson - Director
Healing Community member since 2003, with 35 years experience in business development, project funding, management, consulting and Non-profit administration. Alumnus of Arts, Humanities and Business programs at Western Washington State University and Fairhaven College.
Current responsibilities include asset management for the Healing Community and management of a domestic mining and energy trading company. Business experience includes management and operation of international seafood catcher/processor/distributor, import/export, international business consultancy, commercial real estate and project finance, project management of automated control systems, startups in telecommunications and fractional jet ownership, development of international banking relations.

Paul Oebel - Director
In the business world, Paul has broken records and stays on top of his league. He founded his internet business in 1996, and still goes strong today. In 1999, he helped found, along with a powerful Board of Directors, a homeless shelter that thrives today as holding the top percentage rate in the nation. His accommodations range from national certificates of Accomplishment from the Nation’s Capital to local municipalities.
Before this, his career has owned a construction company, and held a record-breaking position of being a national recognized event coordinator. He’s been active in over 6 Chambers of Commerce, and holds the title of a chamber’s Ambassador of the Year. Presently he operates a website and graphic design company, a nonprofit organization, and an online Broadcasting TV Network.

David Webster - Director
David Webster has worked 35 years in the alternative health and medical field. The last 7 years were spent developing and working with the Mesosphere Medical Center in Newport Beach, California. He was the Marketing Director for the clinic and helped develop the training facility to train other doctors in the medical modalities of Mesotherapy and Lipodisolve. He helped design new profit centers and formatted a business plan to model future clinics nationwide.

David also has a strong background in product development, advertising and marketing expansion.
He is certified to counsel troubled teens and interventions.

Alan is the CEO and Chairman of GMT Studios in Culver City, California which he founded more than 37 years ago. www.gmtstudios.com Alan is our “in house” head of the television show America’s Missing Children.

Jennifer Nelson - Director
Jennifer Nelson is founder and owner of NutritionMasters, LLC. She is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator with over 35 years of experience working in the field of nutrition. She provides Medical Nutrition Therapy to adults and children for diabetes, weight management, eating disorders, pregnancy, and all high risk and low risk therapeutic nutrition needs.
​
She works as a consultant to individuals, businesses, and community programs, including family medical clinics, pediatric clinics, prenatal clinics, medical research clinics, as well as preschools and acute and long-term care hospitals. She also recruits, trains, and oversees other Registered Dietitians for consultant positions.
Jennifer is frequently asked to be a speaker. She has developed and delivered curriculums for many audiences, including trainings and consultation to physicians, nurses, and nurse practitioners; She has often been interviewed on radio and television and has been consulted for magazine and newspaper articles.

She speaks Spanish and French fluently, as well as some Italian and Russian.

Elle Kawata - Director
Elle has been involved in real estate sales, finance and development for over 25 years. In 2008 she founded S3 – Smart Sustainable Solutions – to develop a sustainable modular building system primarily to address the tremendous need for affordable housing in her home state of Hawaii. Her company received a Green Design Award for its first project—the Waldorf School of Orange County’s 10,000 square foot high school expansion. She has since assembled a solid team of professionals who are ready to create healthy communities anywhere in the world. S3’s mission, “to successfully develop low-cost building solutions to aid in creating green and sustainable communities globally,” fits in perfectly with the goals and ambitions of the Healing Community.

Faye Docuyanan, Ph.D. - Consultant
Faye Docuyanan Estrada received a B.A. from California State University, Long Beach, 1992, an M.A. from the School of Social Ecology (Emphasis in Psychology and Social Behavior) University of California Irvine. 1996,and a Ph.D. School of Social Ecology (Emphasis in Environmental Analysis and Design) University of California Irvine. 2002. She currently works as a Youth Development Specialist for World Vision’s Transformational Engagement Programs. She provides training and capacity development for youth and community organizations in the southern California area. Part of her work is coordinating the Los Angeles Youth Empowerment Project in the MacArthur Park neighborhood near downtown Los Angeles. The Youth Empowerment Project is a comprehensive program training high school students in Leadership, Community Youth Development, Community Organizing, and Advocacy. The program partners with local organizations to develop youth leaders who can mobilize and speak out on behalf of their community.
